A sandhill crane is four feet of bird with a hawk’s eyesight. They will circle a spread a dozen times before they commit — and when they do, they hang over the decoys at twenty yards with their feet down, rattling.
We scout the evening before and set up in the field they actually fed in — layout blinds, full-body decoys, and calling that stops when it ought to. Three birds a gun, and the best table bird in North America.
The run builds through December and January, with birds trading between the playa lakes where they roost and the picked corn and winter wheat where they feed.
