Why this ground

Lubbock sits under the middle of the Central Flyway, and that geography is the whole reason the hunting is good. The playa lakes hold the water. The picked grain fields hold the birds. Come November the sandhill cranes stack onto the Texas High Plains in numbers you have to see to believe, and they feed in the same corn and winter wheat morning after morning.

We hunt private land, leased field by field from landowners we know. That means no public-land pressure and no crowding, and it means we can rest a field after we hunt it. A field gets worked once, then left alone. It is why the birds still decoy in January.

How we hunt

We scout the evening before and set up in the field the birds actually used — not the one they used last week. Layout blinds are brushed into the stubble, decoys are set to the wind, and the calling stops when it ought to. The guide is with you all morning and calls every shot.

We work the limit honestly. Three cranes a gun is the limit, and if it takes until mid-morning to take them the right way, we stay until mid-morning. When the shooting is done, the birds are breasted, bagged and iced the same morning, ready for the cooler or the flight home.

The people

Small parties, first-timers welcome

We keep parties small — a handful of guns to a field, one guide with them the whole hunt. Larger groups get more fields, not bigger ones. Most of our clients have never shot a crane, and that is fine. The guide will let you watch the first flock work before you ever raise a gun.

Who runs it

WTX Outfitters is a small, owner-guided operation. The same guide who scouts your field is the one calling your hunt — start to finish, first light to the last bird cleaned.
